7-Eleven Invites Customers to BYOC for Slurpee’s 50th Birthday Celebration

Bring Your Own Cup (BYOCup) promotion will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on March 18 and 19 at participating 7-Eleven stores

Slurpee fans will be brimming with excitement as they fill their qualifying Slurpee vessel of choice for $1.50.

7-Eleven is celebrating the 50th Birthday of its iconic Slurpee with the return of Bring Your Own Cup (BYOCup) Day this weekend, March 18 and 19, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

For the promotion, Slurpee fans bring in a qualifying “cup” of their choice and can fill it up for $1.50. Customers are allowed one cup per person on BYOCup Day.

Fans are invited to show off their cups by tagging their photos with #BYOCupDay, and a BYOCup Day geo-filter will be available at 7-Eleven stores, according to a release.

“Last year’s BYOCup Day was a huge hit, and because this year is the big Slurpee Fiftee celebration, we added a second day so more people can get in on the fun,” says Laura Gordon, 7-Eleven vice president of marketing and brand innovation. “We saw just how creative Slurpee fans can get during the first BYOCup Day. They filled drums, kettles, fishbowls, helmets and teapots. I can’t wait to see what they bring this year.”

IRVING, Texas , Aug. 15, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- It's almost time to head back to school, but there's still time for one more summer Slurpee ® celebration. 7-Eleven, Inc. is bringing back Bring Your Own Cup days (#BYOCupDay) Friday, Aug. 19 and Saturday, Aug. 20 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Whether celebrating the last days of summer or the first days of school, Slurpee-lovers young and old are invited to grab a container and fill it with their favorite flavor Slurpee drink. The cost to fill their chosen "cup" at participating stores is $1.50 , the average cost of a medium Slurpee drink and a great deal for customers with extra-extra-large cups. Note: Featured Sour Patch Redberry flavor is a limited-time offering, and fans can use this opportunity to enjoy the sweet and sour Slurpee drink before it's gone.

Each person can only bring in one container, which must be leak-proof, safe and sanitary, and fit upright through an in-store display with a 10-inch-diameter hole. That means no trashcans or trash bags, kiddy pools or kitchen sinks. For those who forget, 7-Eleven has 32-ounce Slurpee fishbowls available for purchase for just $3.99 , while supplies last.

"This is Slurpee's 50 th birthday year, so everything is bigger, and that includes BYOCup Day," said Laura Gordon , 7-Eleven vice president of marketing and brand innovation. "This year's event is double the days and happening twice as many times. Last time, lots of people posted photos on social media, unofficially competing for 'most unusual' honors."

Part of the entertainment is capturing the Slurpee experience with photos and sharing it on social media. To encourage social media participation, 7-Eleven is using the hashtag #BYOCupDay so Slurpee fans can share their crazy containers on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. An animated Slurpee lens for Snapchat users will add to the messaging fun Aug. 19 , and a Snapchat geo-filter will be available at stores both days.

"We started Slurpee season in the spring with BYOCup days, and we are closing out the summer with a second round," Gordon said. "People loved it then, and we know they'll be back so we invite them to get creative and bring on the fun!"

7-Eleven's BYOCup Day is a worldwide phenomenon. Besides the United States , 7-Eleven stores in Australia , Canada , the Philippines and Malaysia have held BYOCup Days.

Slurpee drinks purchased during BYOCup Day will count toward the retailer's 7Rewards ® "Buy Six, Get the Seventh Free" drink offer available on the 7-Eleven mobile app in the United States . If customers already have six digital punches on their rewards card, they cannot redeem their free seventh drink at BYOCup Day.

In addition to Slurpee drinks, the 7Rewards program includes 7-Eleven coffee and its other hot beverages, plus Big Gulp ® and Chillers ® drinks. The 7‑Eleven's mobile app is available in the Apple App Store or Google Play.
