Pepperidge Farm Turned Goldfish Crackers Into Mac & Cheese

Pepperidge Farm Turned Goldfish Crackers Into Mac & Cheese

Fish-shaped pasta comes in four cheese sauce flavors

Even among the most strident foodies, a lot of people have a soft spot for the bright orange foods of their childhood, like Goldfish crackers and boxed macaroni and cheese. But Pepperidge Farm has decided to create a nostalgia juggernaut by fusing the two into one cheesy orange product. That's right, they're rolling out a new line of Goldfish cracker-flavored macaroni and cheese.

"Macaroni" in this case is a slight misnomer, because these orange boxes are actually full of goldfish-shaped pasta, with little smiling faces and everything. The line will roll out with four cheese sauce flavors: Butter Parmesan, Cheesy Pizza, Nacho Cheese, and Cheddar. The sauces are reported to be made with real cheese and, somehow, no artificial preservatives.

“Just like mac and cheese, the Goldfish brand is adored by children and adults alike, so it made perfect sense for us to add the fun and wholesomeness of Goldfish to this favorite classic food,” said Jared Konstanty, senior vice president of general manager snacks. “We’re thrilled to be able to deliver even more smiles to our devoted fans with the launch of Goldfish Mac & Cheese.”

According to Foodbeast, the new line will be available at Walmart stores exclusively as of Monday, June 24. Yes, that's tomorrow, and with the wave of nostalgia and curiosity these mac and cheese bowls are likely to inspire, you may need to get in line now.

Or just try out one of our best macaroni and cheese recipes for a less fish-shaped version you can make at home.

Goldfish Is Releasing A Frank’s RedHot Flavor

If you’re a fan of Frank’s RedHot, there’s a new snack hitting stores that you’ll want to keep on your radar. Just in time for summertime BBQs and beach trips, Goldfish has teamed up with the hot sauce brand for limited-edition Goldfish Frank’s RedHot crackers.

Goldfish Frank’s RedHot crackers are made with the classic hot sauce ingredients, including notes of vinegar and a blend of aged cayenne peppers. They have the same flavor as original Goldfish, just with the heat of Frank’s RedHot.

A Pepperidge Farm spokesperson tells Simplemost the crackers are the result of more than 35,000 fan requests for the flavor, making it the No. 1 most-requested flavor of Goldfish. The crackers will arrive on shelves at retailers nationwide for a limited time beginning in May.

This is far from the first product crossover involving Frank’s RedHot. Subway has a new Frank’s RedHot Buffalo chicken sandwich and, believe it or not, Dunkin’ had a Frank’s RedHot Jelly Donut last year.

While the doughnut is no longer available, the sandwich is still on Subway’s menu. Along with chicken and Frank’s RedHot, it also has ranch dressing and toppings of your choice, though the sandwich shop recommends lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers.

If you’re looking for something to go with your sandwich, Frito-Lay has hot sauce potato chips that are flavored with Frank’s RedHot. The chips are available nationwide at stores like Meijer and Walmart.

Frank’s RedHot also has a few of their own new products, including Buffalo ‘n Ranch sauce and a canned Bloody Mary. The pre-mixed Bloody Mary cocktails are flavored with Frank’s RedHot Original Cayenne Pepper Sauce and have an alcohol by volume of 5.5% for a 12-ounce can.

There are also plenty of recipes using Frank’s RedHot as well, if you’d rather make something yourself. The brand has dozens of recipes on their website, including dip, mac and cheese, burgers and even flatbread pizza!

The recipe for Frank’s RedHot Loaded Buffalo Chicken Flatbread calls for chicken, hot sauce, bacon and three kinds of cheese: cream cheese, mozzarella and blue cheese.

Preparation

Bring a pot of water to a boil and cook dry pasta according to the directions on the box. Once cooked, strain and cool by running cold water over the pasta. Once the pasta is cooled, toss with olive oil and salt and set aside.

In a large heavy bottom pot, melt the butter over medium low heat. Once the butter is melted, add in the flour and cook for 5 minutes to create a blond roux. (The roux should have a slightly nutty aroma and the raw flour flavor is cooked out.) Once the roux is ready, gradually pour in milk and evaporated milk 1 cup at a time, whisking constantly. Once all of the milk has been added, increase the temperature of the stove to medium and bring to a simmer, whisking constantly. (The milk will slightly thicken once it comes to a simmer.) Once the milk sauce begins to simmer, add in Velveeta chunks and continue to stir constantly using a rubber spatula until the Velveeta is completely melted and you have a silky-smooth cheese sauce. Turn the heat off and allow the cheese sauce to cool to room temp. (It should still be fluid, but not hot, about 70°F.) Once the cheese sauce is cooled, mix in the cooked pasta to the cheese sauce and stir to combine. Transfer to a 13x9-inch baking dish and refrigerate until completely cooled. Once cooled, cover with plastic wrap and store in your refrigerator for up to 3 days, or transfer to your freezer and store for up to 3 months until ready to use.

When ready to bake, remove from the freezer and allow to defrost. Preheat your oven to 300°F, pour 1 cup of whole milk over the top of the mac and cheese, top with cubed butter and cover with aluminum foil. Bake for 35 minutes or until the center is hot. Remove the foil and cover the top of the mac and cheese with shredded cheddar and return to the oven to continue baking for an additional 10-15 minutes. Once the cheese is melted and lightly browned, remove from the oven and serve. Garnish the top with the Goldfish crackers and enjoy!

Goldfish crackers are known as the fish-shaped snack found in toddlers' hands or on the floor of any minivan. But the kid-friendly crackers are getting a spicy adults-only makeover this spring. Pepperidge Farms and Frank’s RedHot® have collaborated for a limited edition cheddar cracker flavored with the famously hot condiment. New Goldfish Frank's RedHot® crackers will swim into stores next month and will be available while supplies last through the summer.

Despite being known as a children’s snack, the tiny cheddar crackers have many fans who grew up eating goldfish and still have a taste for them.

"We learned that adults are big fans of Goldfish and it's an appetite we've never fully satisfied," said Janda Lukin, Chief Marketing Officer, Campbell Snacks. "'Hot' is the #1 most requested Goldfish flavor across social, so we wanted to bring the heat with an unexpected partnership between Goldfish and Frank's that fans will love."

Invented in 1958 by a Swiss biscuit company, Goldfish crackers were introduced by Pepperidge Farm in the U.S. in 1962. The original flavor was a plain saltine, but over the years Campbell’s has created several flavors including pizza, sour cream and onion, white cheddar, and the ever-popular cheddar. Goldfish have also been made in different colors and character shapes as well as sweet graham cracker versions.

Goldfish Frank's RedHot® crackers are formulated with cheddar, aged cayenne peppers, and vinegar, creating a cracker flavored like the hot sauce that America puts on everything from chicken wings to mac and cheese. The brand’s catchy slogan, “the snack that smiles back, Goldfish!” will put a smile on the face of anyone who loves spicy things. Goldfish Frank's RedHot® crackers will be available anywhere that sells Goldfish crackers beginning in May of 2021. Hurry and grab yours before they’re gone.

How Pepperidge Farm Duped My Family

This is a picture of me on my first birthday. My father was clearly holding me back from taking a chunk out of my cake with my hand. Now I don’t remember this day exactly – but I do remember this Pepperidge Farm Golden 3 Layer cake because we had it more than just on my 1st birthday, we ate it all of the time. I also remember having the worst asthma and allergies as a child too, but of course did not realize those symptoms were related to what I was eating…

My parents were the first people in their respective families to come to America from India and did not have a slew of homemade family cake recipes to choose from when celebrating events. Growing up, my Mom did make the BEST Indian desserts ever, but that didn’t matter. My family wanted to celebrate like everyone else in America – with cake! I remember this cake so vividly and can almost taste it in my mouth right now. We had it countless times throughout the years. It came out of the freezer section in a white box and I will never forget having to wait for several long grueling minutes for it to thaw on the counter.

Little did we know at the time, but we were clearly being duped. What we thought we were getting and what we actually ended up consuming were 2 totally different things. My poor unsuspecting foreign parents figured it was frozen because it had been baked fresh (probably on a farm like the label suggested) and needed to be preserved. They were clueless to the fact that it was actually preserved not by freezing, but by a slew of chemicals and other artificial ingredients that helped keep it from breaking down, and to keep it “fresh.”

GMOs were not in production or even invented yet on my 1st birthday – so this cake went from pretty bad to REALLY bad in the late 1990’s when food companies like Pepperidge Farm started sneaking GMOs into our food. This was right around the time I left the house for college and discovered Costco cake, which I thought was better (but that’s another story) and stopped eating this cake.

Looking back at this photo, I wanted to understand why the heck a company named after a farm would sell junk food filled with garbage like this? I was downright shocked when I learned the history of Pepperidge Farm and how it started.

The founder Margaret Rudkin had a son who was asthmatic and had an allergy to commercially baked products that contained preservatives and artificial ingredients. He would have terrible reactions when he ate the bread sold in their town’s local bakery, so she decided to make her own bread without additives. The son’s doctor saw an immediate improvement in her son’s allergies after making the switch to home baked bread and started to recommend her bread to his patients with asthma. He eventually convinced Margaret to sell the baked goods to small grocers throughout the area. She named the company after her family’s farm – “Pepperidge.” Her baked goods became very popular especially after she visited Europe to discover what is known as the Milano cookie and Goldfish cracker from Switerzerland and brought it back to the states to sell her own licensed version. Campbell Soup bought her company in 1961 and Margaret continued as the head of the company until she died in 1967. I am not sure when Campbell Soup completely destroyed the integrity and quality of her products – but looking at the ingredients in Pepperidge Farm products today, there is NO WAY these ingredients would be considered natural, free of artificial ingredients, additives and preservatives, like Margaret originally intended for her products.

Case in point – Gold Fish is being sued right now for misleading labeling and false advertising. On the label of Gold Fish it states “Natural” and “No Artificial Preservatives,” however, the product is made with genetically engineered ingredients (GMOs) – namely canola or soybean oil. How can a company claim something is natural when they are using ingredients made in a laboratory? Remember there is nothing natural about taking DNA, a virus or bacteria from one species and inserting it into another. GMOs are man made, not tested for long term human safety and pose disastrous consequences to our water, land and the entire food supply.

I’ve been quoted before saying that I think Gold Fish is one of the most dangerous products on supermarket shelves. The reason I say this is because they are so friendly, unassuming, “made with smiles” and look “natural” enough for millions of families to feed them to themselves and their children. In actuality, they are nothing more than refined white flour colored with annatto, made with GMO oils and a certain special ingredient called “autolyzed yeast” that is actually a hidden form of MSG. This ingredient is probably the most disastrous because it stimulates the brain cells to remember a taste, make you want more and enhance the flavor of something that would other wise not taste as addicting. This is the first cracker that millions of children eat… and this has to stop.

When I saw a new product on the shelf from Pepperidge Farm called “Baked Naturals” – I thought it was a pretty daring move considering the recent lawsuit and all the potential GMO ingredients it contains in the form of various oils, cornstarch and soy lecithin.

Recently, I was delighted to find out Pepperidge Farm removed artificial coloring from their line of Gold Fish and created a new Mac & Cheese product that is colored naturally. However, it would have been nice for them to leave out the yeast extract – another form of hidden MSG and possible GMOs in the form of maltodextrin.

There is even Gold Fish shaped 100% whole wheat bread that is full of GMOs, preservatives and other ingredients like carrageenan that are seriously questionable because of their link to intestinal inflammation. So many moms are buying this product for their children thinking it is natural and healthy, but that can’t be farther from the truth.

Pepperidge Farm’s Light Style Wheat bread has fooled me in the past. I thought I hit the jackpot, getting to eat two slices of bread for 80 calories, but the only person hitting the jackpot was Pepperidge Farm by taking my money and millions of other people’s money and selling us cheap ingredients in the form of GMOs, high fructose corn syrup, dough conditioners (DATEM is linked to asthma), preservatives and artificial sugars.

The artificial sweetener “Sucralose” (a.k.a. Splenda) is added to keep the calories down, make it unnaturally sweet and get you addicted. Recent research out of Europe showed rats developed leukemia after consuming Sucralose. This is obviously an ingredient no one should be consuming… especially if you are trying to lose weight.

Diet breads are worthless when they contain artificial sweeteners because they increase sugar cravings and promote weight gain. That’s right – consuming artificial sweeteners actually increases your appetite. Think about it – when someone consumes something that is sweet, but it has little to no calories – their brain receives a signal to want more calories because their body is not actually getting any energy (i.e. enough calories) to get satisfied. So that person keeps looking for gratification elsewhere and ends up craving more.

The thing that makes me the most angry about Pepperidge Farm cookies is their fancy packaging. It’s like they were specially made just for me with those fancy compartments divided with paper cupcake holders. They make it seem like you are buying such a premium upscale and high quality product – it even says the word “Distinctive” on the label. These Milano cookies, along with other flavor varieties contain nothing but cheap worthless ingredients that do nothing in terms of nutrition for your body. Quality cookies do not contain partially hydrogenated oils, but instead real butter.

If Margaret Rudkin were alive today – what would she think? Do you think she would have sold her company to Campbell Soup knowing that her products would turn into the same ones that caused her son so much trouble?

Luckily, I haven’t seen any Pepperidge Farm products in my family’s pantry for a long time now and I hope it stays that way. I obviously haven’t bought this brand in a while and thankfully don’t have bad asthma or allergies anymore either.

If you know someone who still buys Pepperidge Farm products, please share this post with them. There is no more integrity left in their brand and they do not deserve anyone’s hard earned money.

Guy Fieri's recipe required many steps and a sickening amount of heavy cream.

As I gathered the ingredients to make the mayor of Flavor Town's macaroni and cheese recipe, I was shocked by the amount of heavy cream in the dish.

Heavy cream is great since it can add a rich, smooth texture and a lot of flavor to a meal, but I have never in my life seen a recipe with four cups of heavy cream. Measuring all of it out kind of turned me off.

This recipe also required more ingredients than the others and it had a pretty lengthy list of instructions.

The macaroni and cheese tasted rich, and it reminded us of diner food.

With four cups of heavy cream and three cups of cheese (cheddar and pepper jack), the resulting macaroni dish was unsurprisingly rich and creamy.

The crispy topping of bacon and panko also nicely contrasted the soft, creamy noodles.

Unfortunately, all of the effort that went into preparing the shallots and garlic seemed trivial since I couldn't taste either ingredient at all. I was also looking forward to a kick from the pepper jack, but there wasn't much of a cheesy flavor in this dish.

This macaroni and cheese mostly just tasted like cream and bacon. The entire thing resembled a baked penne Alfredo dish you might find at a diner, which is no surprise since this recipe is from the host of "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives."

Overall, this somewhat bland dish took a lot of effort and ingredients to make, so I wasn't thrilled.

Goldfish Is Releasing A Line Of Crackers Shaped To Look Like Your Favorite Disney Princesses

What is it about shaped food that just tastes better? I wish I could tell you, but all I know is that smiley face fries and character-themed mac & cheese are just superior no matter your age, and that's why I'll definitely be picking up these new Disney Princess-themed Goldfish crackers.

Goldfish announced the launch of these special-edition crackers this week and they'll make you feel like a kid again. There are three different packs to choose from with six Disney princesses in total showing up on the packages. You'll find Jasmine, Tiana, Rapunzel, Cinderella, Moana, and Ariel on the front of the bags in pairs, but it gets even MORE exciting. Each pack also features crackers shaped like a Jasmine, Moana, and Cinderella, as well as a pink Goldfish cracker.

Sure, these are great for kids, but as someone who already eats a lot of Goldfish and watches a lot of Disney+, you'll definitely find these in my house.

If that wasn't thrilling enough, Goldfish is also teaming up with Marvel for the first time and releasing three different packages with the Avengers on them. Inside you'll find special-edition crackers shaped like Iron Man, Black Widow, Black Panther, and the Avengers symbol. I don't know much about superheroes, but I do know a lot about snacks and these look pretty amazing to me!

Both types of Goldfish will be available exclusively Target starting the first week of June, which is somehow very soon! Pick your favorite princess movie and get ready to snack.
