How to Make a Lucky Charms Wreath

How to Make a Lucky Charms Wreath

Make this cute craft with the kids for St. Patrick's Day

You won’t need the luck of the Irish for this simple project.

Decor always looks better when it is made with love. What makes a piece even more special is the memories you have of making it, especially when it is simple enough to involve the little ones. For St. Patrick’s Day, try busting out the craft supplies for this simple cereal wreath that will make all of your neighbors jealous. This adorable Lucky Charms inspired wreath is great for you and the little ones to work on together and will keep them plenty occupied! Get started on this easy craft today!

You’ll need:

1 Bottle of Modge-Podge

1 Box of Lucky Charms

1 Paint Brush

1 Medium-Sized Styrofoam Wreath

1 Yard Green Ribbon

Step One: Separate

It may seem tedious, but have the kids empty the box of cereal and separate the colored marshmallows from the cereal into two separate bowls. This will make designing your wreath easier.

Step Two: The Base

Take the styrofoam wreath and paint a small section of it with a thin layer of Modge-Podge. Have the kids gently arrange and press the dry cereal onto that section until filled in.

Step Three: Seal

Once you have the dry cereal in place, seal it by placing a thin layer of Modge-Podge and allow it to dry.

Step Four: Apply Charms

Add color by painting sections of the wreath with Modge-Podge and applying the “charms” as you see fit. Once you are finished decorating with charms, apply another layer of Modge-Podge to seal and allow to dry completely.

Step Five: Add Bling

Twirl green ribbon around the dried wreath or make a large green bow to place at the bottom center. Secure with Modge-Podge and allow ample drying time.

St Patrick’s Day is one of my favorite holidays. Maybe it’s all the leprechaun lure or the four leaf clovers, I’m not sure.

So with St Patrick’s Day coming up, I wanted to come up with a few rice krispie treats themed for the day. Justin and I worked on these fun Gold Rice Krispie Treats and also these Green Rice Krispie Treats.

But I really wanted something I could make super quick also. And that’s when these Lucky Charms Bars entered the picture.

These are so super easy with only four ingredients and no baking. They take no time at all to whip up a colorful batch. And did I mention, how super magically delicious they are?

Making Lucky Charms Bars is basically the same as how to make rice krispie treats, just change out the type of cereal you are using. (Much the same as when making these equally colorful Fruity Pebble Rice Krispie Treats.)

Step one

Melt your butter and marshmallows and mix together. You can do this over low heat on the stove or in the microwave.

Pro tip: don’t overheat your marshmallows, they’ll get super hard and stiff.

Step two

Mix in your Lucky Charms cereal. Make sure to stir thoroughly so that the cereal is evenly coated in the butter and marshmallow mixture.

Step three

Using a buttered (or non-stick spray) coated spatula, spread your cereal and marshmallow mixture into a buttered dish.

Step four

Let your bars cool (this usually takes around 20-40 minutes) before cutting into serving sized squares.

Can I make Lucky Charms Bars in the Microwave?

Yes! You definitely can make these in the microwave. Just instead of melting butter and the marshmallows on the stove top, you melt them in the microwave. Super easy!

How do you store Lucky Charms Bars?

You’ll want to store these in an air right container. Room temperature is best.

Putting them in the refrigerator doesn’t ruin them (and I’ve done this before). But it definitely does make the bars harder and not as chewy.

I’m a little obsessed with making things in big batches. It’s a huge time saver later. And also, if you shop with coupons and stock up on an item, it’s better to be able to use it up before it goes bad.

So, if you want to make a double batch (or larger) or perhaps, you can’t finish them all in a few days, you can freeze them too.

  • Lucky Charms Cereal - You can use the original lucky charms for bright colorful treat. For St. Patrick's Day use the St. Patrick's Day (All green and gold) Lucky Charms.
  • Marshmallows - I like to use the mini marshmallows. It's just what you need for this gooey recipe.
  • Butter - I use salted butter for mine. It gives a hint of saltiness that goes well with all the sweet. However, unsalted works too. You can always throw in a pinch of salt.
  • Vanilla extract - This adds another layer of delicious flavor.

Room Temperature Butter:

Your butter is at room temperature when you press it and it lightly gives but still holds its shape. If you try to bend it it will curve but won’t snap or crack. Depending on the temperature of you home, the time it takes for butter to get to room temperature can vary. My home is usually between 69-72 degrees and my butter takes 20-30 minutes to get to this stage. To speed things up you can place it in the microwave on 50% power for 20 seconds, flipping, half way.

If your butter is too soft or melted your cookies will spread when cooking and and be thin.

How to Make Lucky Charms Treats

Just like classic Rice Krispies treats, you can make these goodies in the microwave OR on the stove.

Stove Top : If you want to go the more traditional route and use the stove top you definitely can. Melt the butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the marshmallows and heat until gooey and smooth. Stir frequently so the mixture does not scorch on the bottom. Remove from heat and add to the cereal and mix.

Microwave : Using the microwave is a great alternative to the stove top. Simply place the butter and marshmallows in a large microwave safe bowl. Heat the mixture in 20-30 second increments, stirring in between, until gooey and smooth. Complete the recipe as written.

Once the cereal and melted mallows are combined, pour them into a greased 9吉 pan. Pat it down with wax paper or spray some cooking spray on your clean hands and press down.

Recipe Notes:

  • Measure out all the ingredients before starting. The recipe is fairly quick and its easier to have everything ready to be added then to measure as you go.
  • Line the pan with wax or parchment paper or grease well so it can be easier to remove from the pan after cooling.
  • Do NOT use old marshmallow or overheat the marshmallows or the end result will be hard and dry.
  • Gluten-free : Great news guys! According to the General Mills website their Lucky Charms are gluten free and marshmallows are naturally gluten-free. So This treat is GLUTEN free.
  • Dairy free? Technically butter is a dairy product so I cannot claim this treat as dairy free However, many people who cannot tolerate other dairy products can have butter. You can also try a dairy free butter substitute.

LUCKY CHARMS MARSHMALLOWS: I get a lot of questions asking me how many cups of marshmallows I used for this Lucky Charms Munch, and I would have to say that I used at least 1 1/2 cups of marshmallows. And if you don’t want to pick out all the marshmallows from the cereal, you can just buy a bag of marshmallows….making this munch even easier to make!

WHITE CHOCOLATE:I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you use white chocolate baking bars for this recipe. I like to use the Ghirardelli White Chocolate Baking Bars. BUT if all you have is white chocolate chips, here is a tip to make sure you melt the chocolate chips correctly. When I melt chocolate chips, I like to add about 1 teaspoon of shortening to the chocolate chips and microwave in 30 seconds intervals, stirring after every 30 seconds until the chocolate is smooth.

CANDY MELTS: I used pink, vibrant green and yellow candy melts. You can find them in the baking aisle at WalMart or Target.

MIX IN MORE:Feel free use your favorite mix-in’s like peanuts, Chex cereal, semi-sweet chocolate instead of using white chocolate to coat the munch, the options are endless.

Recipe tips

Wondering why sometimes your cereal bars end up too hard and firm? Follow these simple tips for the best soft and chewy Lucky Charms treats!

  • Don&rsquot over mix: Stir the cereal into the marshmallow mixture gently and just until combined. Over-mixing can lead to hard bars.
  • Don&rsquot over pack: Do not press the cereal into the pan too tightly or you will end up with hard treats.
  • Wait to cut: Once the bars are cut they being to get firmer so wait until just before serving to cut the bars to keep them as soft and chewy as possible.

Pro Tip: To make your bars extra pretty reserve a handful of the Lucky Charms marshmallows and pressing them into the top of the treats after they are pressed in the pan. This gives the top an extra pop of color!
