Strawberry-Ginger Punch

Strawberry-Ginger Punch

If you don't have a bunch bowl, use a big glass vase--it's nice and tall and doesn't take up too much space on your table.

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces fresh strawberries, hulled, halved or quartered if large (about 3 cups), divided
  • 1 3-inch piece ginger, peeled, thinly sliced, divided
  • 1/2 cup (packed) fresh basil leaves, divided
  • 3 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 2 12-ounce cans club soda

Recipe Preparation

  • Combine sugar, 1/2 cup strawberries, half of ginger, and 1/3 cup water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve sugar. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until berries soften, about 3 minutes. Let cool. Strain and set syrup aside.

  • Muddle 2 cups strawberries, 1/4 cup basil, and remaining ginger in a large jar or bowl. Add brandy, lime juice, and reserved syrup and stir to combine. Chill at least 30 minutes and up to 2 hours to let flavors meld.

  • Strain mixture into a large punch bowl, pressing on solids to release as much liquid as possible.

  • Add club soda and remaining 1/2 cup straw-berries and 1/4 cup basil. Serve over ice.

  • DO AHEAD: Syrup can be made up to 1 week ahead. Cover and chill.

Strawberry Ginger Switchel Recipe – an All-Natural Old-School Gatorade

This switchel recipe has been on my radar for years. In fact, I have four (FOUR!) bottles of molasses in my pantry because it&rsquos a main ingredient and I have had plans to make switchel for years.

Touted as the old-school Gatorade, switchel is the electrolyte-filled energy drink of early American farmers.

Laura Ingalls Wilder mentioned switchel in &ldquoThe Long Winter&rdquo:

&ldquoMa had sent them ginger-water. She has sweetened the cool well-water with sugar, flavored it with vinegar, and put in plenty of ginger to warm their stomachs so they could drink till they were not thirsty. Ginger-water would not make them sick, as plan cold water would when they were so hot.&rdquo

This health tonic is a simple (and delicious!) drink made out of apple cider vinegar, a natural sweetener of some sort (molasses, maple syrup or honey) and ginger.

Switchel has been recorded in the United States since the late 1600&rsquos, supposedly brought to the colonies from the Carribean. It&rsquos also referred to as Haymaker&rsquos Punch (you can guess why) and &ldquoswitchy&rdquo.

If you make your own apple cider vinegar, or have you hands on a starter culture, this easy to make thirst-quencher also becomes probiotic!

Strawberry Party Punch

So I have been making this lime sherbet punch for every single special occasion. As much as I LOVE that punch and I think it’s the best punch in the whole world, sometimes I realize variety is good. I love this Strawberry Party Punch.

I’m teaching myself to like change once in a while! I’m glad I switched things up and tried this red strawberry party punch for my Groundhog day party last month (if you’re just tuning in, then yes, I celebrate Groundhog day!). This punch is so easy to make and a really pretty color to boot! Also, to make things EXTRA fun, I lit up the punch with submersible decorative LED ice cubes.

Everyone always goes crazy over them! You can make them flash all different colors or choose from a variety of colors to have them stay on for the duration of the party. I set the ice cubes to light up the punch red since this was a strawberry party punch. It was so pretty. I wished I got a photo of it once it was dark in the kitchen, but you can see what they look like here on Amazon). These things are awesome!

I couldn’t keep the bowl filled up and I got many compliments on this punch. For your reference, there were about 25 people at the party and I filled the bowl twice and that was perfect. Enjoy!

Strawberry Ginger Switchel

Switchel is my latest ‘thing’. This is the perfect refreshing summer drink, especially when strawberries are in season. Good for you and soooooo easy !

I had never heard of switchel until I was telling a friend about my Kombucha ‘science experiment’. She said ‘It sounds a lot like switchel.’ Switchel?

So… Switchel is a centuries old drink that apparently was the original ‘Gatorade’. It was served to the farmers working in the fields in the summer heat to rehydrate them. It was often called ‘Haymaker’s Punch’.

The beauty of Switchel is it only takes about 10 minutes to make, it sits out at room temperature for for 24 hours and a night in the fridge. Way easier than Kombucha. ( I will let you know how my Kombucha ‘science experiment’ goes).

Actually – you could blend it and serve it right away but letting it sit out increases the probiotics.

The fundament of switchel is that you use unfiltered apple cider with ‘the mother’ so this is a fermented drink, full of oh-so-good-for-you probiotics. The vinegar helps support digestion so it is great to have before or with meals.

The berries add their own minerals and sweetness. Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties.

Besides that – it is lively, refreshing, not overly sweet. In fact it is sort of tart and that makes it refreshing.

Strawberries apparently tend to make for a higher level of fizziness than many other fruits or flavourings. So beware. I filtered my batch and funneled it into swing top lid bottles. The last bottle stayed in my fridge for about two weeks. When I opened it I had quite a sustained ‘PSSSSTTT’. It didn’t explode or fizz over though. Batches may vary though so I would recommend opening over the sink just to be safe.

This is so simple to make and delicious to drink I am starting to question the extra time and effort it takes for Kombucha. I will hold off on final judgement just in case my next batch of Kombucha blows my socks off… but it will have to be pretty darn good to beat this…….

11 Large-Batch Cocktails for Your Next Party

Serving mixed drinks at a party can be tricky business. You can hire a bartender, but really, if you could afford to hire a bartender for a party, you'd probably live in a nicer place with more pleasant roommates (or no roommates). You can stand there and mix drinks yourself, but then you're working all night. You can leave out a bunch of mixers and liquor out, but that's going to end with all the mixers running out within 30 minutes of your first guest's arrival and a bottle of vodka spilled on the rug. There is only one great solution, and that's punch &mdash a large-batch mixed drink that you make before the party and don't need worry about again. Here are 11 delicious ways to make it:

1. Strawberry Pisco Punch

Pisco, a South American grape brandy, is a mainstay of well-stocked bars in Peru and Chile. This summery strawberry pisco punch is a classic cocktail that showcases the unique flavors of pisco beautifully.

2. Pineapple Rosé Sangria

Having a perfectly lazy summer afternoon requires having a tight sangria game. If yours needs a little work, try shaking things up a little with some rosé wine and pineapple.

3. Raspberry-Rhubarb Collins Punch

Fizzy and sweet, this punch variant on the classic Tom Collins goes down easy. And, really, when was the last time you had a drink with rhubarb?

4. Strawberry-Ginger Punch

Don't think of this as punch, think of it as a bottomless vodka-strawberry spritzer. Doesn't that sound like something you've always wanted?

5. Strawberry Wine Punch

Wine can make a great base for a punch, especially if you know your friends aren't going to pace themselves with a liquor-based one. And this chilled white wine punch with strawberries is a perfect option for the summer.

6. Watermelon-Hibiscus-Lime Margaritas

We live in a time when almost any flavor combination can make its way into a margarita, and in the case of this ultra-refreshing watermelon-hibiscus margarita, that's a really good thing.

7. Cider Rum Punch

Sock this one away for the fall, or those days in August when you start fantasizing about wool sweaters. It may not be right for a hot afternoon, but the cider rum punch is absolutely perfect when you want to give your guests something to warm up both body and soul.

8. Ginger Beer-Pineapple Rum Punch

Like a good summer fling, this punch is a little bit sweet and a little bit spicy. Serve it at your summer party and set the right tone for romance.

9. Strawberry-Blood Orange Rum Punch

Festive times call for colorful drinks, and this vibrant red punch made with strawberries and blood oranges packs a wallop of color along with plenty of sweet, sippable deliciousness.

10. Brûléed Grapefruit Punch

Memorable cocktails start with memorable flavors, and the sweet-bitter contrast of brûléed grapefruit is about as memorable as they come. This is a punch they'll be talking about, possibly for years to come.

11. Vodka Mint Lemonade

This refreshing lemonade has a lot going for it &mdash the mint and lemonade provide relief from the scorching sun while the vodka helps you forget about your sunburn.

7 Tips For Serving Drinks at Your Party/ Baby Shower

I thought it was important to include the following tips, which will apply to the baby shower you are hosting, or any party.

  • Make it simple. There is no need to overwhelm yourself. Yes, we have given you tons of choices here but choose one, possibly 2.
  • Plan slowly. Don’t stuff weeks worth of party planning into the day of the baby shower. You will be severely stressed out and you won’t enjoy the party. Use a baby shower planner to pace yourself.
  • Plan ahead. Do as much as you can ahead of time so that you don’t have your hands full with things that could have been done before.
  • Preparation is important but… don’t make your refreshments too far in advance. If your baby shower punch needs fizz, do not add the fizzy part until the guests have arrived and ready to drink. If you add it too early, there’ll be no fizz left in the drink.
  • Stick with the tried and tested. Do not try out a new recipe on the day of the baby shower. Pick your drink(s) ahead of time and test them before the party.
  • Consider buffet style, for drinks. Buffets are always easier, even for drinks. Have your fancy pitcher(s) or punch bowl(s) ready on a table, along with party glasses, cocktail napkins, and garnishes. If you like, prepare a few drinks so that guests can see what it’s supposed to look like but the idea is to make it easy for yourself.
  • Be prepared for anything. If your baby shower punch is delicious, you may run out. Be prepared for this by having the supplies you need to make another batch, or two.
