Beyond Lattes: The 10 Best and Worst Pumpkin Spice Products

Beyond Lattes: The 10 Best and Worst Pumpkin Spice Products

Once the holiday that signaled the end of summer laziness and the beginning of back-to-school madness, Labor Day weekend has become synonymous with the return of pumpkin spice season. It’s that wonderful time of year when you just want to get cozy, and everything tastes like cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. It all started with the Starbucks pumpkin spice latte, which was introduced in 2008 as a temporary seasonal drink, and soon cultivated an almost cult-like following: an army of apple orchard-Instagramming, latte-sipping, North-Face-wearing enthusiasts.

In recent years, companies like Nabisco, Kellogg’s, and Entenmann’s have caught on to the power of the pumpkin, and started pumping out their own pumpkin-spice-flavored products (many of which don’t actually have pumpkin in them at all). We’ve rounded up the good, the bad, and the ugly, so you don’t have to stand in your grocery aisle, staring in consternation at the endless autumn-themed options.

See the Beyond Starbucks: 10 Best and Worst Pumpkin Spice Products (Slideshow)

We found that pumpkin spice pairs best with sweet products and desserts. Chocolate and cinnamon-nutmeg, for example, go together like an autumnal peanut butter and jelly. Our runner-up for best pumpkin spice product is Hershey’s Kisses; the sweet white chocolate paired with a pumpkin-like filling makes for a great indulgence (and an amazing trick-or-treat handout).

But then there are the wacky and not-so-wonderful products that missed the mark, which should have skipped pumpkin spice season altogether, like most savory and salty treats. Our runner-up for the worst pumpkin spice product is Maine Root Pumpkin Pie Soda. The result of this unholy combination is way too sweet, and we think root beer is best left alone without any crazy flavorings.

Jack’s Pumpkin Spice Ale

Nothing complements good beer better than a hearty (but not over-the-top) dash of nutmeg and cloves-seasoning. We suggest starting with Jack’s from Anheuser-Busch, but then heading over to more a more complex (and less sweet) seasonal beer like Dogfish Head.

Oreos

Rumors abound that Oreo’s newest crazy and wacky flavor will be pumpkin spice. We can’t confirm for sure that this cookie will be a thing, but you should definitely be on the lookout. The Oreo cookie cream could definitely stand up to the comforting flavor of pumpkin spice and we can’t wait for an official announcement.

Take a Break from Pumpkin Spice Everything with Maple-Flavored Treats

Pumpkin spice-flavored treats had their moment in the spotlight, but classic maple is a flavor worth revisting this fall.

IMG_0023.tif

You had a good run, pumpkin spice, but now it’s time to step aside. This fall, maple is making a serious comeback — in our baked goods and in our hearts. It’s not that we ever forgot about the rich, dark sweetener. But with the rising demand for white-sugar alternatives, pure maple syrup is in the limelight like never before.

Although maple is lovely all year round, it’s definitely best in comforting fall dishes. It plays well with other seasonal flavors — apple-maple and maple-cinnamon being classic combinations — but it also complements foods more commonly associated with savory dishes, like bacon or rosemary. Here are a few maple-flavored treats you won’t want to miss as colder weather settles in.

Few food unions are as holy as the marriage between maple syrup and bacon. With Food Network Magazine's breakfast-inspired cupcakes, you get to experience these sweet and savory elements in perfect harmony. When choosing your maple syrup, remember: The lighter the syrup, the more delicate the flavor — so if you want your cupcakes to deliver a robust maple punch, go for a medium or dark amber syrup.

All the Pumpkin Spice Products We’re Buying to Kick Off Fall

The infamous Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte returned on August 25 this year (earlier than ever)—and Dunkin’ Donuts beat the competition by debuting their fall offerings on August 19. Only now are we officially in autumn, so we say, bring on the flood of pumpkin spice products.

We’ll continue updating this (very long, and still incomplete) list of pumpkin spice flavored gems that your pantry definitely needs throughout the season—whether you’re feeling ready for fall or not, there’s no denying it’s finally here.

It’s not like it goes bad…

Naturally, the further we get into fall, the more pumpkin spice products you’ll probably be able to find in local stores too, from Whole Foods to Trader Joe’s—and ALDI as well.

A Dietician Reveals The Best &mdash And Worst! &mdash Pumpkin Spice Foods For Your Diet

The way you feel about pumpkin come mid-August is the way Maggie Michalczyk feels about it year-round. The Chicago-based registered dietician's website and Instagram (@OnceUponAPumpkin) are devoted to tracking down and trying all things autumnal, so we reached out to her to find out which store-bought foods and drinks are worth snacking on &mdash and which ones you should avoid.

Don't forget to pin it for later!

Pumpkin puree takes the top spot in the ingredient list for these gluten-free waffles. What I especially love about them is that they are made with quinoa and amaranth &mdash ancient grains that add to the heartiness, fiber, and full fall flavor in each bite. Top with nut butter, Greek yogurt, and seasonal fruit for a balanced breakfast that's hard to beat.

While we all want to relive our childhood with this breakfast staple, you are better off skipping the spice on this one, especially for breakfast! Coming in at a whopping 14 grams of sugar per pastry, your pumpkin spice calorie allotment is better spent on actual pumpkin pie. Although pumpkin makes an appearance in the ingredient list &mdash it's not until pretty far down &mdash and other "Frankenstein"-like ingredients come before it (high-fructose corn syrup and food dyes like yellow 5 and red 40), confirming this is a pumpkin spice food is better left on the shelf this season.

One bite of this crunchy, pumpkin-cinnamon spiced granola will have you instantly feeling all of the fall feels. Coming in at only 5 grams of sugar per 1/3 cup serving with 4 grams of protein, you can feel good about putting it on just about everything you eat this fall, or eating it my favorite way &mdash straight out of the bag! Extra pumpkin points goes to Purely Elizabeth for using ingredients like quinoa, millet, and amaranth in their crunchy clusters, and sweetening with only coconut sugar. Trust me, there's nothing basic about it!

Unlike its name, this pumpkin spice cereal in fact has nothing "special" about it, K? The pumpkin spice breakfast scene has many key players, and I'm sorry to say there's just not enough room for this cereal that has no actual pumpkin or pumpkin pie spice in it.

Instead of starting your day with the 40 grams of sugar found in a traditional pumpkin spice latte, opt for this extra smooth, and super pumpkin-y cold brew from Califia Farms. It's especially great if you're not quite ready for a hot coffee, and definitely satisfies that morning pumpkin coffee fix! The best part is it's soy-free, dairy-free, gluten-free, and carrageenan-free &mdash a pumpkin spice win for those with certain dietary restrictions or preferences.

If keeping your fridge stocked with these ready-to-drink pumpkin spice lattes is your plan this fall, I beg you to reconsider. One bottle boasts over 40 grams of sugar! That's equivalent to the amount of sugar you would get from a king-sized candy bar. Solution? Choose pumpkin spice coffee grounds, or sprinkle pumpkin spice on your plain coffee grounds before brewing &mdash you'll be surprised just how flavorful true pumpkin spice can be.

Leading the pumpkin spice yogurt pack when it comes nutrition, this Icelandic-style skyr is as thick as pumpkin pie, with a rich, creaminess that will make you think you're indulging when in fact you're not! One cup has more protein than sugar, and is made with real pumpkin. Start chilly autumn mornings with cup, or eat it after a run on a crisp fall day. Either way stock up before they fly off the shelves faster than Bette Midler in Hocus Pocus.

The Easter Bunny called: He wants his puffed marshmallows back. Can we all agree that certain candy needs to stick to certain holidays? For instance, I don't see red and green candy corn around Christmas &mdash and that's a good thing! I say skip these Pumpkin Spice Peeps, and save yourself from an artificially sweetened sugar rush. Let's be real: You'll get enough of that on Halloween, anyway.

Just as pumpkin is to spice, fall baking is to pumpkin bread! Skip Starbucks' version of pumpkin bread and opt for this pumpkin bread mix from Simple Mills. It's made with all-natural ingredients, including almond flour &mdash perfect for all the gluten-free basics out there. You only need to add eggs, water, and oil, then pop it in the oven and wait as the aroma of cinnamon and nutmeg fills your entire house.

TJ's Is Going Full Fall

45 Trader Joe's Pumpkin Products We're Stocking Up on ASAP

Emily Cappiello wrote the original version of this story in 2019. It has been updated with additional images, links, and text to reflect current product availability.

Winner: Pumpkin Spice Cheerios

Sometimes childhood favorites can be upgraded, and pumpkin spicing (it's a verb!) Cheerios is a very good idea. "It actually has a grain flavor," one taster remarked of the subtle spice level. "It would make great cereal milk," added another. If you're looking to jumpstart a crisp fall day, this is your cereal. Whereas Trader Joe's Pumpkin O's had notes of "nothing" and were "underwhelming." Sad trombone.

Lenny And Larry Complete Cookie Pumpkin Spice

While Lenny and Larry boast that this complete pumpkin cookie is "packed with protein," there are actually twice as many grams of sugar in each one. In fact, if you ate the entire thing, you'd consume 32 grams! According to a study in BMC Nutrition, combining sugar-sweetened items like these cookies with protein can actually lead to increased fat storage. Up to you to decide whether that's worth trying this treat.

How to make pumpkin spice lattes in the slow cooker:

You will need:

  • Freshly brewed strong coffee &ndash I like Starbucks Pike Place
  • Pumpkin puree
  • Half and half (or heavy cream)
  • Nutmeg
  • Cinnamon
  • Vanilla extract
  • Sugar
  • Whipped cream for serving, canned or homemade
  • Additional nutmeg for serving

Instructions:

  • Add the coffee, pumpkin, half and half, spices, sugar and vanilla to 5-quart or larger slow cooker. Stir.
  • Cover and cook on high for 45 minutes to an hour.
  • Ladle into mugs, top with whipped cream and sprinkle with nutmeg.

2. Pumpkin Pie Spice Pringles

Pringles likes to come up with some clever flavors. There's the pizza, crab, wasabi mayo, and even ramen. Pumpkin Pie Spice, however, now that's just taking it too far. Once you pop these Pringles, you will definitely be able to stop. It's a seasonal flavor, I get it, but you don't have to put it in everything.
